In the near future, climate change has caused the seas to rise and flood Miami. Extreme daytime temperatures have forced most people to live at night.

Nicolas "Nick" Bannister, along with his friend and fellow veteran Emily "Watts" Sanders, operate a business which allows people to relive specific memories. Watts operates the equipment while Nick provides psychological prompts to help the clients. One day, a walk-in client, Mae (Rebecca Ferguson), arrives asking for his help in finding her missing keys. Nick is instantly attracted to her and, the next night, visits the club where she works as a waitress and singer. Mae makes an impression on him when she happens to sing his favorite song. Nick and Mae begin a relationship, to the chagrin of Watts, who distrusts her.

Nick later wakes up in his company s sensory deprivation tank, revealing that he has been reliving his relationship with Mae repeatedly, a dangerous practice which could forever trap him in the memory. Mae disappeared without a word months ago, and Nick has been searching for her ever since.

Nick and Watts are hired by prosecutor Avery Castillo to retrieve the memories from a comatose suspect that they believe worked for a drug kingpin named Saint Joe. In the man s memories, Nick sees Mae working as a waitress in a club. She quickly become s Saint Joe s mistress and he hooks her on "Baca", a highly addictive narcotic. The memories also contain evidence of Mae, made hard and cold by her addiction, stealing Saint Joe s stash of baca and fleeing town. Nick is devastated to learn that Mae was an addict, something that Watts already knew.

Nick travels to New Orleans and furiously confronts Saint Joe, who says he does not know anything about Mae since she left him. In retaliation, Saint Joe has his men try to drown Nick but he is rescued by Watts who kills Saint Joe and his crew. Back in Miami, Nick and his team have Watts relive her last encounter with Mae and realize that Mae broke into the vault where they store recordings of the memories they access. Mae also took recordings made of Elsa Carine, a client who repeatedly relived her trysts with an older, wealthy lover. Nick recognizes the voice of her lover as Walter Sylvan, a wealthy "land baron" who had recently died.

Investigating, Nick learns that Elsa was recently murdered and that her young son was kidnapped by a woman who matches Mae s description. While searching for Mae, Nick is attacked by Cyrus Boothe, a former henchman of Saint Joe. Realizing that Elsa s son was likely the child of Walter Sylvan, and thus a potential heir to his fortune, Nick confronts Sylvan s widow, Tamara, a one time client whose memory has been damaged.

In a moment of lucidity, Tamara points Nick to a place where Boothe and Mae could be hiding. Nick and Boothe fight, with Boothe almost drowning before Nick is able to subdue him. He takes Boothe back to the office and hooks him up to the machines, despite a warning from Boothe that he will not like the answers he gets.

Throughout the reminiscence, Boothe had confronted Mae and forcibly enlisted her in his plans to con Nick. His memories reveal that the basis of her relationship with Nick was a lie: she had staged the loss of her keys and researched Nick in order to better seduce him, but the memories also show that Mae had come to genuinely love Nick. When Boothe murdered Elsa, she took the woman s son and ran away, stashing him at an unknown location.

Boothe later found Mae and tried to force her to reveal his location, threatening to ply her with baca. Nick watches the memory as Mae delivers a speech to Boothe which is actually meant for him. She indirectly reveals the location of Elsa s son and professes her love for Nick. Then, seeing only one way out of her situation, Mae takes a lethal dose of baca and dies.

A devastated Nick forces Boothe to relive his worst memory: when Saint Joe s men burned him alive as punishment for skimming profits. He then goes and confronts Walter Sylvan s legitimate son Sebastian, who hired Boothe to eliminate Elsa and his half brother in order to protect his inheritance. Sebastian tries to commit suicide, but cannot bring himself to do it and is arrested by the police.

Nick confesses to Watts that he intentionally "burned" Boothe, a major crime which he ll likely be charged with. He then retreats and uses his machines once more to relive his time with Mae. In his memory, Nick recounts to Mae a version of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice where Orpheus does not look back and manages to rescue her from the afterlife.
